LINERS AND FLOATING COVERS FOR PONDS AND RESERVOIRS
Liners are used to prevent water loss through seepage from the base of water reservoirs (i.e. ponds and dams), these are sometimes referred to as pond liners or dam liners. Due to the flexibility of the liners they are able to withstand small ground movements far better then concrete and are impermeable allowing greater control of seepage as compared to compacted earth.
Floating Covers are flexible thermoplastic membranes securely fastened to a perimeter concrete wall or buried in an anchor trench. In use, they float like a boat on water, rising and falling with the changing level of the liquid beneath. These flexible covers are less expensive and easier to install then containment systems constructed of concrete, steel or other materials. Their inherent flexibility withstands ground movements and provides needed durability.
Liners and Floating Covers are an effective, economical solution to a number of water and waste containment problems. Potable water storage, chemical containment, and municipal and industrial water storage are three areas where floating covers have been proven to be particularly useful.
POTABLE WATER
Floating Covers prevent losses through evaporation whilst Liners control losses through seepage. Odor and taste free, they help protect Potable Water supplies by minimising reservoir contamination from dust and dirt, leaves, insects, animals, etc. Literally tons of such debris can collect at the bottom of uncovered reservoirs. This can actually trap chlorine and make it difficult, if not impossible, to maintain a sufficient amount in the water itself.
Floating Covers also exclude sunlight. This reduces problems with algae growth and chlorine depletion. Many states recommend covering all reservoirs containing Potable Water that will be delivered directly to customers.
CHEMICAL CONTAINMENT
Floating Covers help control fumes and odors from chemicals held in storage tanks or lagoons. Liners are used in both the primary and secondary containment of varying chemicals.
